What is good nutrition?

Good nutrition means balanced nutrition. This happens by getting a range of vitamins and minerals and are consuming enough food to accommodate your energy needs. Balance comes from consuming a variety of healthy foods from all food groups including fats, carbohydrates and proteins. These are called macronutrients. We need to consume these everyday in large amounts in order to stay healthy.

If weightloss is your goal, you need to know that many of the diets we see advertised for example; low carb or low fat diets may not be the healthiest because each food group plays an important role in bodily functions. Restricting one or more of these food groups can have a negative effect.

Micronutrients also play an important role in keeping good nutrition as they are essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are produced by plants and animals. Minerals are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. It is important to get your daily intake of both micronutrients and macronutrients to avoid becoming imbalanced and unhealthy. Examples of essential vitamins and minerals are iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin A,B,C,D, E and K. Sources of these vitamins and minerals can come from fruit, vegetables, lean meats and fish, nuts, seeds and dairy foods.
